Modeling Reality with Virtual Worlds

Virtual worlds have come a long way and today it can be used in several diverse ways that were not possible years ago.  According to the article, After Second Life, Can Virtual Worlds Get A Reboot, Jacki Morie, gave incredible insights into the different ways that virtual world can be used such as in Healthcare or training soldiers for combat.  She also made a remake about how people would never have to be alone again because with virtual worlds it is like a community, there will always be someone there.  Virtual worlds also not only allow for adults to be creative, but it also fosters creativity among the young generation, said Morie in her interview.  This is a very attractive feature of virtual worlds because it allows them to use their minds and create something pure and amazing.

With technology such as Virtual Worlds, it will have its pros and cons that will either attract or reject its use.  On the pros of Virtual World as quoted from the article, The Advantages, and Disadvantages of the Virtual Classroom and the Role of the Teacher, is that it allows for a new form of communication between students, teachers and the information which is readily available. However, from the perspectives of the people who are creating this information, the teachers it is very time consuming which is not an appealing quality of virtual worlds. From what I read I believe that virtual worlds will become used a lot more than it is in the gaming industry.

  1. I think inspiring the young generation to be creative is a great idea as well. However, I think that there should be some boundaries set for children because of online predators using these virtual websites.

    1. Hey Stella,
I agree with you there definitely should be boundaries set in order to protect our children from predators. It is up to the parents to establish these clear lines and help monitor their online presence.

  2. The idea of having a virtual community is so scary. It almost reminds me of the Matrixs. We will end up having two separate worlds, haha!

Social networking sites

Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and WhatsApp, allow its user to collect via real-time with each other no matter the time, place or occasion you have happening.  These sites allow us to make new friends, share too much of our lives that shouldn’t be shared, follow and support important causes, get live updates such as traffic or MTA.  Twitter, I found a little more changeling but only when I have, much to say and I am limited to a specific number of characters.  But other than that, it is very engaging, and it allows you to have a discussion/debate on anything that catches your attention.  WhatsApp is one of my favorites, I use it daily to communicate with anyone of my contacts.  One feature that I really like and that drew my attention to it that I could call people from my home country and communicate in real time.  Facebook is another great site for making ‘friends’ from all over the world.  It allowed me to reconnect with my old High School friends an...

Social media, a negative repercussion of being social

Social media has become like a six sense for everyone, and I mean everyone, from my 3-year-old nephew right down to my 60-year-old uncle. The objective of my paper is to examine the negative repercussion of social media throughout different platforms upon being social. My stand is that it is not necessary that an individual is anti-social from the use of social media but how does it affect them when it comes to interpersonal communication when you must log off if any of us ever do. The areas to be examined will be but not limited to family, education, workplace and psychological. With the use of firsthand experiences and published articles, I will attempt to establish a concrete connection between social media and its negative effects of being social.

The United States Department of Transportation reported that in 2016 there were over three thousand fatalities due to distracted drivers in the entire country. Technology has become so addictive that we cannot put our phones away while driving. We do not acknowledge the problem until a tender age victim is involved or the accident resulted in the death of someone close. Instead of waiting for something so brutal and fatal to happen we should approach the problem head-on. An innovative technology to help prevent this would be an app or factory installed program on our phones that stop text messages to and from the phone. The program/app will be able to calculate speed and will disable texting until the vehicle has come to a stop. There are some kinks to workout but a technology such as this can help reduce texting and driving accidents.  https://www.nhtsa.gov/press-releases/usdot-releases-2016-fatal-traffic-crash-data
