Both blogs and wikis are new media technologies which are used to communicate. However, there are a few contrasts between blogs and wikis. Blogs are managed by an individual or a group of people and the content can be commented on by anyone. It allows for user interaction, you can share your comments, suggestions or criticism. Whereas Wikis are generated and maintain and can be edit by anyone who has access to it. It shares background and other vital information about a specific subject. Both blogs and wikis allow users to connect in ways that were not possible some years ago. Because of their key features, it allows both to be well used and joins perfectly into today’s networked world. The article, An Internal Wiki That’s Not Classified, shows how wikis have made such an impact in the world of new media that even that State Department has adopted it can create their own ‘Diplopedia’.
Collaboration is a very important element in new media. It allows its’ users to create and work together on any project online. An example of this is from the article, Brooklyn Blog Helps Lead to Drug Raid, which talks about how ‘nosey neighbors’ put this unsavory attribute to a beneficial use for their community. Because of their curiosity, they were able to communicate via blogging, sharing their sightings which drew the attention of the police and lead to several arrests. Through collaboration, these people were able to bring change to their community. A really interesting way to see wiki work would be by using it in schools more specifically through course selection. It would have the course name, course description, what will be done in the class (syllabus or detailed outline), reference materials and student's comments which should be effectively and efficiently filtered in order to eliminate any bias comments. Everything you need for selecting a class under one umbrella, no more looking on different websites and finding insufficient information.
I agree that collaboration is a very important element in new media. I also think that collaborating as a group on the wiki brings different perspectives and personalities onto one designated page.
ReplyDeleteHey Danica,
DeleteI agree some work is done to a higher standard because of the different perspectives each member brings to the team.
