Exploring New Media with Jennifer

Both blogs and wikis are new media technologies which are used to communicate.  However, there are a few contrasts between blogs and wikis.  Blogs are managed by an individual or a group of people and the content can be commented on by anyone.  It allows for user interaction, you can share your comments, suggestions or criticism.  Whereas Wikis are generated and maintain and can be edit by anyone who has access to it.  It shares background and other vital information about a specific subject.  Both blogs and wikis allow users to connect in ways that were not possible some years ago.  Because of their key features, it allows both to be well used and joins perfectly into today’s networked world.  The article,  An Internal Wiki That’s Not Classified,  shows how wikis have made such an impact in the world of new media that even that State Department has adopted it can create their own ‘Diplopedia’. Social media has become like a six sense for everyone, and I mean everyone, from my 3-year-old nephew right down to my 60-year-old uncle. The objective of my paper is to examine the negative repercussion of social media throughout different platforms upon being social. My stand is that it is not necessary that an individual is anti-social from the use of social media but how does it affect them when it comes to interpersonal communication when you must log off if any of us ever do. The areas to be examined will be but not limited to family, education, workplace and psychological. With the use of firsthand experiences and published articles, I will attempt to establish a concrete connection between social media and its negative effects of being social.
